Jewelry Materials & Allergies
At KMABEL, we take great care in selecting high-quality materials for each of our handcrafted pieces to ensure they are both beautiful and comfortable to wear. We understand that some customers may have sensitivities or allergies to certain metals, so we aim to provide transparency and guidance on the materials we use and how to care for your jewelry to minimize potential reactions.
Our Jewelry Materials
1. Gold-Plated Jewelry
• Material: Our gold-plated pieces are made with a high-quality base metal such as brass or stainless steel, coated in a layer of real gold. The plating provides the luxurious look of gold while remaining affordable and durable.
• Hypoallergenic Properties: While gold plating itself is typically hypoallergenic, the base metals used (such as brass or nickel) may cause reactions for those with sensitive skin. If you have known metal sensitivities, we recommend limiting prolonged contact with gold-plated jewelry to avoid irritation.
2. Stainless Steel
• Material: Stainless steel is a durable, tarnish-resistant metal that makes for excellent everyday wear. It is widely known for its strength and ability to retain its shine over time.
• Hypoallergenic Properties: Stainless steel is generally hypoallergenic, making it a great choice for those with sensitive skin. However, if nickel is present in trace amounts, it could potentially cause mild reactions in some individuals.
3. Sterling Silver
• Material: Sterling silver consists of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% of other metals, typically copper, to strengthen the piece. It is a popular choice for its natural beauty and versatility.
• Hypoallergenic Properties: Sterling silver is typically hypoallergenic for most people. However, a small percentage of individuals with extreme sensitivities to copper or silver may experience reactions. We recommend ensuring your silver is polished and clean to avoid tarnishing, which can sometimes irritate the skin.
4. Other Metals
• We occasionally use metals like brass or bronze in our designs. These materials are beautifully versatile but may cause reactions in those with metal sensitivities.
Allergies and Sensitivities
1. Nickel Allergy
• Nickel is one of the most common causes of allergic reactions to jewelry. While we strive to minimize nickel content in our jewelry, small traces may be present in some of our metal bases, particularly in pieces with brass or stainless steel. If you are allergic to nickel, we recommend sticking to our nickel-free gold-plated or stainless steel pieces labeled hypoallergenic.
2. Skin Sensitivities
• If you have sensitive skin or are prone to allergic reactions from certain metals, we recommend opting for pieces made from sterling silver or stainless steel, as these materials are generally safer for sensitive skin. Additionally, ensure that your jewelry is cleaned regularly to remove any buildup that could cause irritation.
3. Preventing Reactions
• Apply a Barrier: For those with mild sensitivities, consider applying a clear barrier such as hypoallergenic jewelry coating or clear nail polish to the part of the jewelry that comes into contact with your skin. This can help prevent irritation and prolong the life of your piece.
• Limit Prolonged Contact: Remove your jewelry before sleeping, swimming, or exercising to reduce prolonged contact with sweat or moisture, which can sometimes exacerbate reactions.
Caring for Your Jewelry to Avoid Allergies
• Keep Your Jewelry Clean: Regular cleaning with a soft cloth can help reduce the risk of irritation by removing oils, lotions, and other residue that can accumulate on your jewelry. Be sure to avoid harsh chemicals that could degrade the materials.
• Store Separately: Storing your pieces in the velvet pouches or jewelry boxes provided by KMABEL will help protect them from moisture, dust, and tarnishing, reducing the likelihood of a reaction.
What to Do if You Experience an Allergic Reaction
If you notice any redness, swelling, or itching after wearing your jewelry:
1. Remove the Jewelry: Immediately take off the piece to prevent further irritation.
2. Clean the Affected Area: Wash the area with mild soap and water, and apply a soothing lotion or cream designed for skin sensitivities.
3. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the reaction persists or worsens, seek advice from a medical professional to determine the best course of action.
At KMABEL, we prioritize both style and comfort, ensuring that each piece is designed to not only look beautiful but also be as safe as possible for a variety of skin types. Should you have any concerns about the materials used in your jewelry or wish to know more about specific products, our Customer Care Team is happy to help.
